About Big Paddock

Lay

Free as a bird

In New Zealand, just 1 in 4 eggs that you can buy at your supermarket are free-range. But demand is growing as more and more New Zealander's struggle with the ethics of caged egg production. At Big Paddock, our hens are unrestricted. They’re free to roam across a generous area during daylight hours, then come home to a comfortable and fully code-compliant hen house in the evening.

At Big paddock its key that the farmers share values around providing a great environment to raise hens and demonstrate the best of hen keeping practices to look after them, and provide an absolute guarantee of where the eggs come from.  We get this independently inspected so you know that when you purchase our eggs, you’re sourcing ethically raised eggs from people who genuinely care for their animals.

Aucklander's have figured out Big Paddock eggs from Whangaripo Valley are local and delicious so have begun tucking into Big Paddock eggs in a bigger way, leaving us a bit tight for eggs in the Lower North Island.

Now we just need to find a big paddock in the South Island…

Whangaripo Valley Eggs

The Whangaripo Valley farm where we source Big Paddock eggs is in Wellsford, about an hour and a half by car north of Auckland. It’s owned by Mathew and Gill Quested, their business partners Udo and Vicki con Mulert and a number of other family members.

When the partners bought the former sheep farm in 2011, they chose to build a free-range egg operation from scratch, with communal nests, greater space for the birds, natural ventilation and generous outdoor areas. They wanted to provide eggs that were traceable, of a very high standard and that represented good value for shoppers. To achieve that, everything was built to the new Code of Welfare. As a result, the buildings where the hens are housed are clean, fresh, and comfortable for the birds.

So you know that when you purchase our eggs, you’re sourcing ethically raised eggs from people who genuinely care for their animals.

Wairarapa Eggs

As the current representative of free-range farmers in the egg industry body, Chris Martin wanted to build a brand new free-range farm that he would be proud to bring people too - and he thought to show it to us.  We liked what Chris and his family had done and their passion and commitment to his hens and eggs.

After a number of taste tests, visits and improvement to his systems to work in with the Big Paddock philosophy, a solution was born. Chris has dedicated specific flocks to big paddock which will allow all of us to grow and provide more delicious fresh eggs off big paddocks which is better for the birds and means some more eggs for you to enjoy.
